My favourite poem!

借你的高枝炫耀自己;
为绿阴重复单调的歌曲;
长年送来清凉的慰藉;
也像戟;
我们分担寒潮、风雷、霹雳;

Dear all

I understand that many of you are suffering from post-Term 2 madness and pre-common test insanity –so am I. For those who aren’t: good for you. I know loads of you IB people are on like, WOW now, but I’m sending this in hope that you guys read it immediately when you’re back, having been deprived of the qwerty for a week.

But IB or non-IB, AC or R, these boundaries must be blurred when it comes to the enjoyment of the spectacular phenomenon that is music. Of course, in this case I refer to the singular evergreen musical wonder that we are undoubtedly rather accustomed to – classical music –chamber music. Sounds familiar? Sure it is.

Accentuations
A chamber music concert by Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) chamber orchestra

It will be held at the increasingly popular Lee Foundation Theatre on Saturday, the 7th of June. Unlike most concerts that forcibly snatch an entire evening out of your grasp, Accentuations spares a thought for your busy life and hence curtains will rise at 1500hrs and the last reverberations of the applause should wane at approximately 1700hrs. This gives you time to prowl the overflowing shopping malls of our city centre and pick out that fetching pair of shoes you’ve been dying to own since the beginning of the year. You could, though, remain in the auditorium till well beyond 1700hrs and way into the evening and continue clapping forever should you be inclined to do so. Though the tickets are at a predictable flat rate of $8 *( Too good to be true, huh?) and temporal bankruptcy may arise, I assure you that it is well worth the money -and the short-term deficit that your wallet might suffer. Besides, how often is it that you see a single digit next to the vile dollar sign nowadays?

The programme is beautifully unique. Every piece of music on the concert programme was written by a musical genius belonging to the periods of Romantic or Contemporary music. From Borodin and Saint-Saëns to Brahms and Chausson, your afternoon – and eight precious dollars – will be very well spent indeed. Duets, quartets, sextets and a lovely piece with the whole motley crew to end the concert with a flourish – allow both quality and novelty to be hold you spellbound at Accentuations. Oh, before I forget: the first two little petit-fours on the Accentuations menu are the first and second movements of the Borodin String Quartet in D Major – played in its original quartet form. Incidentally, the cello part for the piece will be played by yours truly. Also, the other piece where you might find it fun to play Spot Shiru will be the amazing finale – that eclectic, scintillating zoological jewel of a piece: Saint-Saëns’ Les Carnaval des Animaux.

I apologise for my verbosity, though I must earnestly salute you for reading all the way here. Please do not stop.

My learned friends: please do come for Accentuations. It is promisingly brilliant and will be lots of fun. Please SMS or email me if you’d like to come, and how many tickets you’d like to have. No, this does not mean you can get three tickets just to lie down in the theatre, though I suppose you could if you really want to (look stupid and earn all sorts of stares during the concert). I look forward to seeing loads of you there.

Cheers,
Shi Ru

PPS – IB HL Music people: your attendance is mandatory – stipulated by Mr. Wong YF. I hereby appoint Lisa in charge of informing the HL Music class. Thanks, yay.

Dr Lee Speaker Award!

Whooo, it is finished!

Hahas, had impromptu sleep last night while going through the emcee script (yet again).
Nancy observed that i was reciting it in my dreams. Oh dear….

The whole experience was amazing, especially with fantastic teachers, cool timmy Timlim, random jokers who hang around, brothers and sisters who prayed and most importantly, God. Yea, it was really awesome that Tim joined me in prayer although he’s not yet a Christian (:

Sorry to the people whose names i mispronounced, especially 陈奕安! There were some messed ups throughout the course of the event, but since it’s the first time i’m doing such thing, i’ve decided to forgive myself.

Some photos here! ^^

Setting up of stage.

Semi-formal rehearsal.
Oh manz! i look like some overpowering feminist!! ><
Hahas, 林老师 and i agree that Tim is like a 大老爷们儿. xDD!

Away for lunch.
Had a good time with Mrs. Alice Teo and scholar pals (hahs, we actually had a girl talk). (x

The joker. The nerd wannabe.

Big Ben.
Big brother & emcee mentor! xD

What, 3 chairs?
Nah, you’re under optical illusion, pal.

Another round of rehearsal.

Nice…

Nicer!! Bilingual power team (x

Nicest!!!! ACS forever~

Yea, To God Be The Glory, The Best Is Yet To Be!

Bon voyage to brothers, sisters, and pals who are going for WoW!

Wow, Exodus & Esther (us!) & Proverbs are going to Kunming just 1 day before Beijing Olympic Game starts!!

Unspoken grief

i wonder… what went through this young mind upon that moment of silence?

GOD! Where are you among my people?
And what’s with me?
In a different world, i’m feeling oh-so-comfortable.

[Updated at 10pm]
An SMS that freaked me out:

(Btw, is there such a poem?)

LDC Prelude!!

Hohoho, this is a day like no other, man!
Spent a total of 15 hours in my beloved school!!

Yea, woke up slightly after 5am and reached minutes past 6am to pray with John and Dan.. Leb came soon after too! (x It was crazy, i know. Then again, i already knew that ACSi is not the place where i preserve my sanity (just remembered someone once said that ppl say that she looks like an asylum). Haha!

Pre-camp was a blast!

The sweats, tears, blood, shouts, laughter… indeed a foretaste of the intense and uplifting spirit of LDC… Somehow, i’m certain that LDC will be a life transforming experience. Hahs, and i really like my Squad (Woohoo Squad 1!) with Thad, Aaron, Alex, David, Zac and 2 other boys who didn’t turn up today. Fellow Primer I/Cs are cool people too! Yea, to quote Mr Jonas Chow, “May this camp be a landmark experience for everyone who comes, Year 2s and 5s (and the officers) alike.” Bracketed words mine.

Stayed back with Karlo, Mr Lee, Mr Tan, Leb and Shane (Y3) after debrief… and ordered in pizza. Mr Kan came into the Primers Room too! The conversation we had was a bomb. Unsettlingly and disturbingly deep questions of Faith were raised and explored (the questions all have no absolute answers), supernatural occurrences within the history of 12th (I) Company were told, senselessly crappy “jokes” were exchanged…

In the end, got a lift home (: Mainly confabulated thoughts and opinions on love and relationship (no named analogy provided) with Sirs. Realized that Mr Lee is very understanding and perceptive. He can make a very good counselor, i think.

Anywayz, the fact to me is that BB rocks & rules!

Thank you my brothers and sisters. <3 you all!!

Random Updates:

*Slept at 4am (slept here and there before that la, so it’s not THAT crazy) on Thurs for Dr Lee Li Eng Speaker of the Year’s emcee speech, and still it’s not ready. >< Real thing on coming Wednesday. Whaaaa!

*Group 4 project gave the Fantastic Four (Sam, Mel, Adel and i) heart attacks. Despite that, i still love the group loads! <33

*Spent $8 on 2 scopes of Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream in school. School based WoW fund raising rocks big time!!

*Praying with Audrey is like the funniest thing, HAHA! “Please help this stupid girl with stupid ideas… and let her not fall for #!$#@, because he is damn ugly also…”

(: Friday girl talk with her round and round on the NUS High track was cool.

*Reaching WoW destination in 4 day’s time (Fugong, China), not ready for it at all. :/

Breaking free

They want you to be like them,
they need you to be yourself.

Yet,
who are you?

Dearest Father,

Thank You. i really do.

Thank You for seeing me through all these days… days of physical strains, mental enervation, emotional turmoil, and spiritual dryness. Once again, You’ve humbled me. Ah… the futility of my fleshly strength. When will i master the art of victorious surrender?

Thank You for the brothers and sisters i have in you, especially John, Timloh (Bestie OSB!), Leb, Timlim, Dan, Karlo, Anna, Pet (Pettypoo!), Audrey, Jayne, Feli, Sam, Tina, Carren etc etc.. They are indeed Your precious vessels, people who will be there to pray, to encourage and edify. Thank You for wonderful pals too, too many to be named. May You draw those who have yet to know You to Christ Jesus!

Thank You for the privilege to serve You, to be Your voice in a sense (thank You for alleviating the soreness of my throat while on stage). Through today’s Chapel Worship, You made me realize that in order to draw closer to You and know You more, i need to cast aside all petty concerns, be obedient to Your call to serve, and just rely on Your strength through faith.

Psalm 139

>< Formally sick now. Reckon it’s the time to take a day off to rest in the Presence of God, and clear that heap of work.

Random updates:

*Failed English!! T_T

*Went out with mummy yesterday (after like 4 months)! She bought me 4 shirts, 1 mobile, a pair of shoes, a bag, and treated me to dinner and dessert… Justin said it’s like Daughter’s Day. xD

*Miss the spectacular Rugby Match against SAJC (bleah x.X). Spent some time with Y4 Vice Head Prefect Timlim to prepare for the Chinese Speech Competition.

*Met Jingying(after being a Victorian, a Rafflesian, she’s now a Hwachongian) on the bus on the way to find my new phone (left it in a sports shop)! She prayed in the morning for familiar faces to show up, and it was answered!

*Hou Yue made me laugh till i almost choke on my Udon during dinner. xD Her sense of humour is stupendous!

The Word of God

Zep 3:9
“Therefore wait for Me,” says the LORD,
“Until the day I rise up for plunder;
My determination is to gather the nations
To My assembly of kingdoms,
To pour on them My indignation,
All My fierce anger;
All the earth shall be devoured
With the fire of My jealousy.

Zep 3:9
“For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language,
That they all may call on the name of the LORD,
To serve Him with one accord.

Zep 3:10
From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia
My worshipers,
The daughter of My dispersed ones,
Shall bring My offering.

Zep 3:11
In that day you shall not be shamed for any of your deeds
In which you transgress against Me;
For then I will take away from your midst
Those who rejoice in your pride,
And you shall no longer be haughty
In My holy mountain.

Zep 3:12
I will live in your midst
A meek and humble people,
And they shall trust in the name of the LORD.

Zep 3:13
The remnant of Israel shall do no unrighteousness
And speak no lies,
Nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth;
For they shall feed their flocks and lie down,
And no one shall make them afraid.”

Zep 3:14
Sing, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem!

Zep 3:15
The LORD has taken away your judgments,
He has cast out your enemy.
The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst;
You shall see disaster no more.

Zep 3:16
In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Do not fear;
Zion, let not your hands be weak.

Zep 3:17
The LORD your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zep 3:18
“I will gather those who sorrow over the appointed assembly,
Who are among you,
To whom its reproach is a burden.

Zep 3:19
Behold, at that time
I will deal with all who afflict you;
I will save the lame,
And gather those who were driven out;
I will appoint them for praise and fame
In every land where they were put to shame.

Zep 3:20
At that time I will bring you back,
Even at the time I gather you;
For I will give you fame and praise
Among all the peoples of the earth,
When I return your captives before your eyes,”
Says the LORD.
